Pada tahun 1794, yang menajdi Kesultanan Riau ialah Sultan Mahmud atau Muhammat Riayat Syah III. Sejak dulu Johor, Pahang, dan Riau merupakan satu Kesultanan. Setelah Sultan Mahmud mangkat, timbullah perang saudara (perang perebutan takhta) antara putera raja yaitu Husain dan Abdurahman.
Kesempatan ini dipakai oleh Raffles (Inggris) untuk memperoleh Tumasik (Singapura). Raffles mengakui putra Sultan yang sulung yaitu Husain sebagai Sultan Johor. Kemudian antara Sultan Johor tersebut dengan Raffles ditanda tangani suatu perjanjian mengenai penyerahan Tumasik (Singapura) kepada Inggris (1819). Selajutnya yang menjadi Sultan di Kesultanan Riau adalah Abdurahman dan berturut turut Muhammad Syah, Mahmud Syah IV, Sulaiman Badurulalam Syah, dan Abdurahman Naadlam Syah.
Karena perselisihan dengan Belanda, maka pada tahun 1913, Kesultanan Riau dihapus secara paksa oleh Belanda. Sultan menyingkir ke Singapura dan dengan demikian berakhirlah Kesultanan Riau.
