A) Apa bedanya laut dan Samudera?
Jika kalian memandang dari pantai, kalian tidak dapat melihat perbedaan antara laut dan samudera. Keduanya sama-sama besar dan sama-sama merupakan kumpulan air asin yang permukaan amat luas. Sebenarnya, ukuran dan bentuknya tidak sama. Hanya ada tiga samudera yang sering disebut dengna tiga “laut dunia”, yaitu Samudera Atlantik,, Samudera Pasifik, dan Samudera Hindi. Samudera jauh lebih luas dari pada laut. Samudera terbesar adalah Samudera Pasifik. Laut tidak sebesar samudera. Biasanya laut hanya mengelilingi Negara, lalu menyambung dengan samudera melalui terusan yang juga disebut dengan laut sempit.
B) Apakah laut sudah ada sejak dahulu?
Pada awal terbentuk, bumi adalah planet tanpa laut dan tanpa kehidupan. Air hanya ada di langit dan tergantung di awan yang tebal di atas bumi. Dari waktu ke waktu, air jatuh ke bumi sebagai hujan. Air itu memenuhi lembah di bumi dan terbentuklah laut pertama yang tidak seberapa dalam. Akan tetapi di bumi ada begitu banyak laut sehingga bumi kita bisa disebut “planet laut”. Laut tidak berada di satu tempat saja karena benua sudah bergeser. Oleh karena itu, muncul laut baru, sementara itu, laut yang lainnya tertutup. Perubahan itu terjadi sangat lambat dan tidak ada yang merasakannya.
C) Apakah ada laut di Planet Lain?
Sejak jaman purba orang sudah mengamati planet di langit. Mereka melihat noda besar pada permukaan bulan yang mereka sebut “laut”. Sekarang, kita tahu bahwa noda itu tidak sama dengan laut yang ada di bumi, hanya dataran rendah yang luas dilapisi debu. Air juga tidak ada di bulan, juga di planet lain yang mengelilingi matahari. Di sana tidak ada laut atau daerah yang permukaan tertutup air. Di planet Mars ada es dalam jumlah besar di sekeliling kutubnya. Es adalah air yang membeku. Barangkali suatu ketika kita bisa menemukan air di planet lain, entah dalam bentuk apa.
