Pada zaman kuno, tercatat sebuah patung raksasa yang dikenal sebutan Colossus of Rhodes. Patung ini dibangun dekat pelabuhan Rhodhes, sebuah pulau yang terletak di kepulauan Mediterania, kawsan Laut Aegean, Yunani. Patung Colossus of Rhodes berdiri untuk memperingati kemerdekaan wilayah Rhodees. Dalam suatu catatan di pulau itu terjadi peperangan. Nah, untuk merayakan kemerdekaan selepas perang usai, akhirnya rakyat Rhodes menjual. Pakaian perang dan memakainya untuk membangun patung sebagai persembahan kepada Helios, sang Dewa Matahari yang merka puja. Akan tetapi ada juga catatan yang menyebutkan bahwa rakyat Rhodes justru membiarkan peralatan perang itu dan menjadikannya sebagai bahan untuk membuat patung Colossus of Rhodes. Perunggu raksasa untuk menghormati Helios sang Dewa, di buat sekitar 292-280 Sebelum Masehi di rumah komando pematung asal Yunani bernama Chares. Dia sendiri boleh dibilang sudah berpengalaman dalam membuat patung besar. Di tangan Chares dan para pekerjanya, proyek raksasa ini akhirnya selesai dalam waktu 12 tahun. Tinggi patung tersebut mencapai 120 kaki. Bagian badan patung Colossus of Rhodes terbuat dari perunggu sedangkan bagian dasarnya terbuat dari batu marmer putih. Setiap pagi, sinar matahari menerpa kulit patung yang berlapis perunggu itu sehingga tampaknya berkilauan.
Sayangnya patung Colossus of Rhodes hanya bertahan selama 56 tahun karena gempa bumi menghancurkan kegagahan patung Colossus of Rhodes. Bongkahan besar patung ini pun tergeletak begitu saja di sepanjang pelabuhan selama berabad lamanya. Meski tergeletak tetapi saja patung Colossus of Rhodes mengundang decak kagum. Bayangkan! Ukuran jempolnya saja sebesar lingkaran lengan orang dewasa. Karena patung Colossus of Rhodes ini sudah terlanjur ambruk, jadi tidak ada yang tahu pasti tentang seperti apa pose patung Colossus of Rhodes yang sesungguhnya. Ada yang menyebutkan patung Colossus of Rhodes berdiri di pintu masuk pelabuhan dengan dua kaki yang melebar sehingga kapal dapat berjalan melintasi kedua kaki. Namun, ada juga yang mengatakan patung Colossus of Rhodes berdiri dengan cara tradisional Yunani yakni berdiri rapat dengan tangan kanan melindungi mata dari sinar matahari dan tangan kiri menggenggam sebuah juba panjang. Raja Mesir sempat menawarkan untuk membangun kembali patung ini tetapi rakyat Rhodes menolaknya, mereka khawatir patung Colossus of Rhodes yang justru membuat Dewa Helios marah. Mereka khawatir kalau patung ini berdiri lagi, sang Dewa akan mengirimkan gempa bumi. Pada abad ke VII, orang Arab menaklukan Rhodes dan memecah bongkahan Colossus of Rhodes menjadi pecahan kecil untuk dijual. Konon, diperlukan 900 unta untuk membawa pecahan itu. Akibatnya, patung indah itu kini menjadi kenangan.
