Di lihat macam penduduk yang diam di Timor Timur maka ditafsirkan bahwa penduduk di sana menggunakan bahasa Portugis, bahasa Cina, bahasa Arab dan bahasa penduduk asli. Seperti halnya Indonesia dulu maka dapat dipastikan bahwa waktu Portugis berkuasa, bahasa Portugis menjadi bahasa nasional, yang dipakai di Jawatan Pemerintah, di sekolah, dan di gereja. Khusus mengenai bahasa yang dipergunakan penduduk asli Timor Timur, jumlahnya banyak sekali. Sesuai dengan banyaknya suku penduduk Timor Timur sebanyak 23 bahasa. Dari 23 bahasa itu bahasa Tetum merupakan dialek umum sesudah bahasa Portugis. Dari 23 bahasa daerah itu adalah:
