Narrative in English Part 3

Communicative purpose: to entertain or amuse and teach the readers, moral values. The generic structure of narrative are:
a) Orientation. Tell about who are the characters involved in the story, where and when the events happen.
b) Complication/ crisis. A series of problems that arise and are experienced by the characters.
c) Resolution. Tell about how the characters sovles the problems.
d) Cod/ moral values. Tell about the changes of the characters deed/ feeling and the moral value that can be taken.
The significant lexicogrammatical features of narratives are:
Ø Focus on specific participant.
Ø Use of material process (for examples Behavioral and Verbal Processes).
Ø Use of Relational Processes and Mental Processes.
Ø Use of temporal conjunctions and temporal circumstances.
Ø Use of past tense.
A) Jaka Tarub and the Seven Fairies
Once upun a time, there lived a handsome and hut young man named Jaka Tarub. He lived alone in his small hut near the forest. Days by days he crops his rice field and looked for fire woods in the forest.
One day, when he passed the nymph lake from looking for fire wood in the forest he saw seven beautiful ladies bathing in the lake. He was so curious, he peeped them through the bushes. Accidentally, there was a pink scraf belonged to one of the fairies floated near the bushes. He istantly took and hid it.
Not long after that, the fairies had finished bathing they wanted to go back to the paradise. They found and wore their own scarves. One fairy, however, could not fin her scarf. She was Nawangwulan, the youngest fairy. The six fairies, then, flew up to the sky following the way of the rainbow leaving Nawangwulan alone on the earth. Nawangwulan saw them leaving inreare. She could not fly and go back to the paradise because she could not find her pink scarf.
Next, Jaka Tarub appeared from behind the bushes. He gave her a curios to cover her body and offered to come home with him. At first, Nawangwulan refused the offer. Since she did not know where togo, Nawangwulang finally decided to follow Jaka Tarub. And Nawangwulan stayed in Jaka Tarub’s barn with him.
After staying for almost a month together in the hut, they decided to get married. And after a year they had a beautiful daughter named Kumalasari. They lived happily and peacefully in the hut. Days by days Jaka Tarub worked in his field planting rice and other crops while Nawangwulan did the house jobs while looking after Kumalasari.
One day, Jaka Tarub did not go to the field. He stayed at home. He wanted to take care of Kumlasari on that day. Nawangwulan wanted to wash their clothes in the river. She asked her husband to keep an eye on Kumalasari and told him not to open the pan cover in the kitchen before the rice was done. This made him so forgives that it led Jaka Tarub not to obey what Nawangwuland told. He opened the pan cover. How surprised he wast see that his wife cooked only a single paddy rice. And since then the rice in the fabric was slowly lessen because of Jaka Tarub’s carelessness.
Month by month the barn was completely empity. Nawangwulan stepped slowly into the barn to get rice to cook. He found only a few paddies left. And suddenly she was very surprised to find her loosing scarf when she took one of the paddies. And after dinner Nawangwulan showed the scraf that she found in the barn. She told Jaka Tarub that she had to leave for paradise. Jaka Tarub felt very sorry and asked for dashing, but it was too late. Nawangwulang flew to paradise with her scarf leaving Jaka Tarub and Kumalasari behind.
B) The legend of Jambi
Once upon a time, there lived in Sumatra Island a very beautiful girl, Putri Pinang Masak. The girl was also a very kind hearted person. This made everyone liked her so much. Many youths and princes from other countries desired her to be his wife. Nevertheless, she refused their proposals because she had not wanted to get married yet.
One day, there was a very wealthy king, the king of the east kingdom, coming to her village. He proposed to marry her. Putrid Pinang Masak was afraid to refuse the king’s proposal although she actually did not love the king, the ugly faced man, at all. She knew that the king would be very angry and there would be a battle if she refused his desire.
Putrid Pinang Masak was so confused before she got an idea to refuse the king’s proposal. Then, she said to the king that she accepted his proposal on one condition. The king should be able to build a very large and beautiful castle completed with all of the home appliances in one night. The work must be finished before the roosters crowed. And if he failed to fulfill the condition, the king had to hand over his kingdom and all of his wealth to her.
For the sake of Putri Pinang Masak, his sweetheart girl, the king agreed with the condition. Soon he invited thousands of skillful people from all over the country even from other country to do the work. And they began to do the colossal work, building the castle, soon after the sun had set. The king himself controlled the people.
Exactly in the midnight, half of the castle was completely done. Nevertheless, it looked very beautiful. And when it was nearly dawn, all the work was almost completely done. Putri Pinang Masak who had been spying on them all night became desperate. She realized that the condition she proposed to the king was only her way to refuse marrying him. And when the castle was only decorating and tidying the wall and the garden, Putri Pinang Masak went to the rooster house. She lighted many lights to make the roosters crow.
Hearing the crowing of the roosters, the king stopped the workers doing their work. He remembered the agreement that the whole works should be finished before the roosters crowed. Then Putri Pinang Masak came to meet the king. And the king admitted that he had failed to fulfill the condition, building a castle in one night. Then he gave up on his desire to marry Putri Pinang Masak. Even he handed over his kindom and all his wealth to her.
Since then, Putri Pinang Masak becam the princes of the east kingdom. And people changed the name the kingdom into Putri Pinang Kingdom. Meanwhile the kings from Java Island called it with “Jambi Kingdom”. The word “Jambi” came from “Jambe” that had equivalent as “pinang”, a kind of small palm fruit.

Tujuan Komunikatif: untuk menghibur atau menghibur dan mengajarkan pembaca, nilai-nilai moral. Struktur generik narasi adalah:
a) Orientasi. Katakan tentang siapa adalah karakter yang terlibat dalam cerita, di mana dan kapan peristiwa terjadi.
b) Komplikasi / krisis. Serangkaian masalah yang timbul dan dialami oleh karakter.

Ø Penggunaan Proses Relasional dan Proses Mental.
Ø Penggunaan konjungsi temporal dan kondisi temporal.
Ø Penggunaan past tense.
A) Jaka Tarub dan Tujuh Fairies
Sekali upun waktu, hiduplah seorang pemuda tampan dan gubuk bernama Jaka Tarub. Dia tinggal sendirian di pondok kecil di dekat hutan itu. Hari oleh hari ia tanaman sawah dan mencari kayu bakar di hutan.
Suatu hari, ketika ia melewati Danau nimfa dari mencari kayu bakar di hutan ia melihat tujuh wanita cantik mandi di danau.Dia begitu penasaran, ia mengintip mereka melalui semak-semak.Sengaja, ada scraf merah muda milik salah satu peri melayang di dekat semak-semak. Dia istantly mengambil dan menyembunyikannya.
Tidak lama setelah itu, peri telah selesai mandi mereka ingin kembali ke surga. Mereka menemukan dan mengenakan syal mereka sendiri. Satu peri, bagaimanapun, tidak bisa sirip jilbabnya.Dia Nawangwulan, peri termuda. Enam peri, kemudian, terbang ke langit mengikuti jalan pelangi meninggalkan Nawangwulan sendirian di bumi. Setelah tinggal selama hampir satu bulan bersama dalam gubuk, mereka memutuskan untuk menikah. Dan setelah setahun mereka memiliki seorang putri cantik bernama Kumalasari. Mereka hidup bahagia dan damai di pondok. Hari oleh hari Jaka Tarub bekerja di sawah tanam di lapangan dan tanaman lain sementara Nawangwulan melakukan pekerjaan rumah sementara menjaga Kumalasari.
Suatu hari, Jaka Tarub tidak pergi ke lapangan. Dia tinggal di rumah. Dia ingin mengurus Kumlasari pada hari itu.Nawangwulan ingin mencuci pakaian mereka di sungai. Dia meminta suaminya untuk mengawasi Kumalasari dan menyuruhnya untuk tidak membuka penutup panci di dapur sebelum beras dilakukan. Hal ini membuatnya begitu mengampuni bahwa hal itu mengarah Jaka Tarub tidak menuruti apa kata Nawangwuland. Dia membuka penutup panci. Bagaimana ia terkejut Wast melihat bahwa istrinya dimasak hanya padi sawah tunggal. Dan sejak saat itu beras di kain itu perlahan-lahan mengurangi karena kecerobohan Jaka Tarub itu.
Bulan ke bulan gudang benar-benar empity. Nawangwulan melangkah perlahan ke gudang untuk mendapatkan beras untuk memasak. Dia menemukan hanya beberapa sawah tersisa. Dan tiba-tiba dia sangat terkejut menemukan syal Loosing ketika dia mengambil salah satu dari sawah. Dan setelah makan malam Nawangwulan menunjukkan scraf bahwa dia ditemukan di gudang.Dia mengatakan kepada Jaka Tarub bahwa dia harus meninggalkan surga. Jaka Tarub merasa sangat menyesal dan meminta gagah, tapi itu terlambat. Nawangwulang terbang ke surga dengan jilbabnya meninggalkan Jaka Tarub dan Kumalasari belakang.
B) Legenda Jambi
Sekali waktu, ada tinggal di Pulau Sumatera gadis yang sangat cantik, Putri Pinang masak. Gadis itu juga orang yang sangat baik hati. Ini membuat semua orang menyukainya begitu banyak. Banyak pemuda dan pangeran dari negara lain yang diinginkan dia menjadi istrinya. Namun demikian, dia menolak proposal mereka karena ia tidak ingin menikah belum.
Suatu hari, ada seorang raja yang sangat kaya, raja kerajaan timur, datang ke desanya. Dia mengusulkan untuk menikahinya. Busuk Pinang masak takut untuk menolak usulan raja meskipun dia sebenarnya tidak mencintai raja, orang berwajah jelek, sama sekali. Dia tahu bahwa raja akan sangat marah dan akan ada pertempuran jika dia menolak keinginannya.
Busuk Pinang masak sangat bingung sebelum ia mendapat ide untuk menolak usulan raja. Lalu, dia berkata kepada raja bahwa ia menerima proposal dengan satu syarat. Raja harus mampu membangun sebuah benteng yang sangat besar dan indah dilengkapi dengan semua peralatan rumah dalam satu malam.Pekerjaan harus selesai sebelum ayam jantan berkokok. Dan jika ia gagal memenuhi kondisi, raja harus menyerahkan kerajaannya dan semua kekayaannya kepadanya.
Demi Putri Pinang masak, gadis kekasihnya, raja setuju dengan kondisi tersebut. Segera ia mengundang ribuan orang terampil dari seluruh negeri bahkan dari negara lain untuk melakukan pekerjaan. Dan mereka mulai melakukan pekerjaan kolosal, membangun benteng, segera setelah matahari telah terbenam. Raja sendiri menguasai orang.
Tepat di tengah malam, setengah dari benteng itu sepenuhnya dilakukan. Namun demikian, itu tampak sangat indah.Dan ketika itu hampir fajar, semua pekerjaan itu hampir benar-benar dilakukan. Putri Pinang masak yang telah memata-matai mereka sepanjang malam menjadi putus asa. Dia menyadari bahwa kondisi dia mengusulkan kepada raja itu hanya cara untuk menolak menikahinya. Dan ketika benteng itu hanya dekorasi dan merapikan dinding dan taman, Putri Pinang masak pergi ke rumah ayam. Dia menyalakan lampu banyak untuk membuat gagak ayam jantan.
Mendengar kokok ayam jantan, raja menghentikan para pekerja melakukan pekerjaan mereka. Dia ingat perjanjian bahwa seluruh karya harus selesai sebelum ayam jantan berkokok.Kemudian Putri Pinang masak datang menemui raja. Dan raja mengakui bahwa ia telah gagal memenuhi kondisi, membangun istana dalam satu malam. Lalu ia menyerah pada keinginannya untuk menikahi Putri Pinang masak. Bahkan ia menyerahkan kindom dan semua kekayaannya kepadanya.
Sejak itu, Putri Pinang masak becam para pangeran dari kerajaan timur. Dan orang-orang mengubah nama kerajaan menjadi Putri Pinang Raya. Sementara itu raja-raja dari Pulau Jawa menyebutnya dengan "Jambi Kingdom". Kata "Jambi" berasal dari "Jambe" yang memiliki setara sebagai "pinang", semacam buah kelapa kecil. ...
