Degree of Comparison

Adjectives have three degrees of comparison:

a) Positive.

Ø  Fast.

Ø  Short,

Ø  Tall,

Ø  Happy,

Ø  Beautiful,

Ø  Big,

Ø  Thin,

Ø  Good,

Ø  Bad,

Ø  Little,

Ø  Many.


b) Comparative.

Ø  Faster,

Ø  Shorter,

Ø  Taller,

Ø  Happier,

Ø  More beautiful,

Ø  Bigger,

Ø  Thinner,

Ø  Better,

Ø  Worse,

Ø  Less,

Ø  More,


c) Superlative.

Ø  Fastest,

Ø  Shortest,

Ø  Tallest,

Ø  Happiest,

Ø  Most beautiful,

Ø  Biggest,

Ø  Thinnest,

Ø  Best,

Ø  Worst,

Ø  Least,

Ø  Most.

Notes:

The Comparative Degree is used when there is comparison between two things of persons. The superlative Degree is used when there is used when there is comparison between three or more things or persons. Use “more” with most adjectives that have two or more syllables. Example: more expensive, more delicious, more beautiful, etc. in normal style, the definite article “the” is used before Superlative Degree.
